Movie Review – Madagascar 2

Posted by chris On February - 10 - 2009

madagascar2_penguin Better then the first? That’s what most critics are saying. I’m not sold on that. It was a good movie, I enjoyed it quit a bit, but I guess I’m just not a fan of Alec Baldwin or *shudder* Nana…

The movie begins where the last one left off, with the lion, giraffe, zebra and hippo from “Madagascar” leaving the titular country and heading back to their homes at the New York Zoo.

From there, their adventure starts.

The original cast of voices are back, including Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Sacha Baron Cohon, Andy Richter, etc But also some new voices are added to the mix, including the late Bernie Mac as Alex the Lion’s dad, Alec Baldwin as the movie’s antagonist Makunga and Will I Am of the Blackeyed Peas playing the voice of Moto Moto, the Barry White of the Hippo world.

Now, like I mentioned, I wasn’t as big a fan of this one as the original, but it was definitely not due to the art or animation. The characters were extremely well done and especially well rigged with lots of squash and stretch. The scenery was breath taking.

My favorite part of the Madagascar series made a come back as well, those funny merc-for-hire penguins lead by Skipper. These guys simply crack me up and this time around they play a bigger part in the movie. Unfortunately, the other comic relief aspect from the previous film and short was back too… Nana… the old woman who beats up Alex near the subway and takes Private thinking he’s a toy in “The Madagascar Penguins in: A Christmas Caper”. In this sequel, she’s on a safari… and she’s more annoying then ever.

The last thing I want to bring up is the features on the Blu-Ray disc… The making of wasn’t one of the best ones I’ve seen, they mostly talked about the voices and barely at all about the film making process. Also, they included a Animator’s Narration, which brings up a small Picture in Picture window of… NOPE, not animators, but directors and producers… WTF?

Oh well… Hopefully DreamWorks Animation’s next film Monsters vs Aliens will be all that I hope.
