Movie Review – Surf’s Up

Posted by chris On January - 17 - 2009

chickenjo So, it’s no secret, I have a thing for penguins, and have for years.

You’d think I’d be sick of them after some bad movies based around them… I’m still shuddering at March of the Penguins and Happy Feet *ungh* But Surf’s Up was something else… funny from start to finish, with great improvisational voice talents such as Jeff Bridges, Diedrich Bader, Jon Heder and Shia LaBeouf.

The film is also shot as a documentary, including voices of actual Pro Surfers. Now, the models were great, the textures were really well done, but what I really liked was the motion capture technology they developed for this film. They wired a camera to the computers, so they operator looking through the lens would see the movie… then wired a MoCap camera to the top of that camera, with thousands of LEDs on the ceiling and walls… so they could control the cameras in real time and give it that ‘live’ feel….

Great job Sony.
