I feel all anxious now… this is the first contest of this type I’ve entered… and the prize is insane… I think I’m going to be holding my breath all week… right now, I’m nervous that I did something wrong during the submission process or I sent the wrong file… or something… oh god…

Clog update

Posted by chris On September - 19 - 2009

So with 6 days left to the 9 character concept contest, I thought I was almost ready to submit my character… until I went out and saw the movie… it’s quite different from Shane’s original short… and there’s quite a few things I want to change on Clog before submitting him…
The story like is going to stay the same, but I’m going to change a bit of the look.

Wish me luck

Movie Review – 9

Posted by chris On September - 19 - 2009

9 9 a new feature film, based on the Oscar nominated short by Shane Acker. A post apocalyptic world where machines and stitch dolls roam the world after man has been eradicated.

9 is the story of nine dolls stitched together and filled with parts of the soul of the scientist who created them. A film that is getting some mediocre reviews, but I personally found brilliant..

The film features voice acting from such greats as Christopher Plummer, Crispin Glover, Jennifer Connelly, Elijah Wood and Martin Landau.

It’s a visually stunning film, with a great story in an interesting world, I highly recommend it.

Movie Review – Oktapodi

Posted by chris On September - 19 - 2009

oktapodi
Oktapodi, a 2009 Oscar nominated short film, is a fast paced story of 2 octopi in love.
Oktapodi, id definitely a fun, fast passed, action driven short, created at Gobelins, L’école de l’image in france as a graduation film

The film, filled with bright colors, a cartoony, yet very clean art style will appeal to anyone with a sense of humor errr pulse.

Movie Review – Monsters vs Aliens

Posted by chris On September - 19 - 2009

MvA
I can’t believe I didn’t write this review when the movie came out.

Monsters vs Aliens is a play on the classic Monster movies. After a horrible accident on her wedding day, Susan Murphy (voiced by Reese Witherspoon) is turned into a giant. In typical government fashion, she is kidnapped and brought to a secret military facility, run by General W.R. Monger (voiced by Kiefer Sutherland) and has been holding monsters since the 50s. The monsters shown in this film, include B.O.B. a blob of blue goop (voiced by Seth Rogen), a mad roach scientist (voiced by Hugh Laurie), a fish-humanoid found in Antarctica (voiced by Will Arnett) and a 50-story tall fuzzy insectoidthingymerbobber… that has been described as the illegitimate offspring of a gerbil and glo-worm. There is a 6th monster held in this base, unfortunately, we don’t get to see much of him… the deceased Invisible Man. When the evil alien overlord Gallaxhar (voiced by Rainn Wilson) attacks earth, the government releases the monsters in order to defend humanity.

This movie, like most 3D animations had elements for all the viewers, comedy geared to the grownups, some disgusting stuff for little boys, giant butterflies for the little girls, but I have to say the story was a bit… weak and predictable.

The modeling, texturing and animating was top notch though, with textures seen on the lips to tiny crows feet near the eyes.

Some other noteworthy voice actors in this film included, Stephen Colbert as the president, Renée Zellweger as Katie and Tom McGrath (Skipper the penguin from Madagascar) as Wilson.

Clog the Real 9

Posted by chris On September - 11 - 2009

So with Shane Acker’s 9 being released in theaters yesterday. Dose.ca has a contest where you create a character concept for the movie 9 with a small bio of the character and you can win a 2 week internship at Starz, the animation studio that made the movie.

I’m always up for a challenge, so I started my own concept character. Clog!

Clog is a machine created by The Fabrication Machine. Clog is composed of a Magic 8 Ball, a brass toilet bobber, doll parts and various other scrap. Now, Clog has a few screws loose (literally) and doesn’t know how to be evil or kill, actually, he thinks he’s the real 8. Clog can not speak, as his mouth is actually riveted shut, so he uses the pyramid in the 8 ball to talk.

I’ve been working on him quite a bit and decided to post an early version of the model… this is far from complete, still alot of modeling left, not to mention the texturing.

Hope you like him.

Movie Review – Ice Age 3

Posted by chris On September - 11 - 2009

iceage3

The Ice Age series is one of my favorites, with it’s unique artistic style and humor, which made Blue Sky Studios what they are today.

So an old friend of mine asked us if we were interested in seeing this flick with his wife and him. When am I going to turn down wonderful 3D movies. Now, Ice Age 3 was released in both True 3D and regular film… due to the show times, we ended up seeing the regular one, though we noticed only a few scenes that would of been great in True 3D.

The 3rd film in the series continues to follow the original characters of Diego (Denis Leary), Manny (Ray Romano), Ellie (Queen Latifah), Sid (John Leguizamo) and Crash, and Eddie (Seann William Scott, Josh Peck) but also introduces, a weasel named Buck voiced by one of my new favorite actors, Simon Pegg.

The story revolves around Sid, wanting desperately to have a family of his own, after seeing Manny and Ellie who are about to have a baby, and Diego wanting to leave their herd. Sid stumbles across some giant eggs which end up hatching baby Tyrannosaurus who think of him as their mother.

It’s a great movie that continues a great series, cute for kids with comedy for grownups.
