As Jennifer and Jack presented the Best Animated Picture, the best Oscar quote ever was done…

Jennifer Aniston: Do you have some special animation career strategy?
Jack Black: Oh yeah! Each year I do one DreamWorks project and I take all the money to the Oscars and bet it on Pixar!!!

Congrats Andrew and Pixar!!!

Over the hump

Posted by chris On February - 17 - 2009

Wow, what a weekend.
So, Saturday, which is supposed to be my course day… I worked and worked on the Alien’s rig… only realizing I busted it.
When ever I’d move the alien around, his head would pop out of shape, always at the same spot.
By this time, we had dinner plans for Valentine’s day and to celebrate my Sister’s 8th wedding anniversary.

Sunday, I started getting sick… some of the guys at work have had this cold/sinus infection for a while, and I finally caught it! I was run down most of the day, but after being cooped up all of Saturday, Ange wanted to go out… so, we did. When we got home, I tried to fix the rig, but got frustrated. Spent some more time yesterday and felt like I was on the brink of just giving up on 3D altogether.

After Ange went to bed, I just sat there in front of the PC and it came to me… I parented the Flexor base and not the Flexor Group!!! So I make the correct relationship and voila! everything is working… I’m actually quite proud of myself for figuring it out without asking anyone at 3D Buzz.

Movie Review – Happily N’Ever After

Posted by chris On February - 17 - 2009

happily2 This one’s a bit of an oldie, but I watched it again this weekend, and figured I should write my 2 cents about it.
Yes, you probably guessed by the title that it’s one of those cartoon movies spoofing the fairytale genre. I know, it’s been done to death, with Shrek and Hoodwinked and many more. And well, this one doesn’t really bring anything new to the table.

The story follows Ella (yes… Cinderella) and he longing for her Prince Charming… well, that’s where the story takes a left turn from the original. Instead, the wizard (voiced by the late George Carlin), who is in charge of making sure that everything in Fairytale land goes according to the book, heads off on vacation, leaving his servants, Mambo and Munk in charge. Well things go terrible wrong and the Evil Stepmother (Sigourney Weaver) takes control.

The movie also stars some 3D animation regulars, such as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., Patrick Warburton and Wallace Shawn.

The modeling is very simple and you can tell they were really using the strong colors to help with moods.

It’s a good time waster, but unless you’re either obsessed with seeing every 3D movie out there(which I am), or really love this genre (which I do)… I wouldn’t rush to rent it.

Friday the 13th

Posted by chris On February - 13 - 2009

13 Yay!, it’s Friday the 13th! And go figure, they’ve re-remade the original Friday the 13th movie… Can’t say I’ve been a fan of that series since I was a kid…

I also find it amusing that Valentines day this year falls on a Saturday as many men find this holiday to be a sorts of horror day :)

Personally, I’ve never really cared for Valentines day… YAY! a day where modern culture expects you to be romantic… doesn’t that take the romance out of it? I know many people may try to use this as an excuse for either having forgotten Valentine’s day or for being to cheap… but I honestly think it’s more romantic to do something any other day during the year…

Movie Review – The Tale of Despereaux

Posted by chris On February - 13 - 2009

despereaux2 One could say I have a thing for rodents; Mickey, The Rescuers, Secret of Nimh, An American Tail… Ratatouille and Flushed Away…
Or, one could continue to confirm my theory about Hollywood Dopplegangers, where one film is made, an other has to be made on the same subject. (OK, I could list about a hundred movies, but I won’t)

The Tale of Despereaux starts off with a Rat… in a kitchen… with soup… see where I’m going here?
Now, unlike other cloned movies, this is where the story departs from it’s Pixar twin. The story follows Despereaux, a small mouse (even for their standards) with big ears.

Eventually, Despereaux meets up with Princess Pea (Emma Watson), who lives locked up in the castle, longing for freedom They then crosses paths with downtrodden Roscoro and depressed jailer Gregory.

To make sure the audience isn’t lost in the story, the story is occasionally ‘paused’ by the narrator (Sigourney Weaver).

The film runs roughly 100 minutes, and yet still feels as though it could have been trimmed a bit.

That said, I have to say the modeling, texturing, lighting and animation is definitely on par with the big boyz.
